Today In History-Franz Ferdinand Was Assasinated, Former President Yar'Adua Declares Assets

  • On This Day 1914, Arch duke Franz Ferdinand and Wife were assassinated, Which Triggered World War I

 Franz Ferdinand was born in Graz, Austria as the eldest son of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria.

Franz Ferdinand was an Archduke of Austria, Austro-Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary. He was the heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne until his death on June 28th 1914.

On Sunday, 28 June 1914,a day that was also the couple’s wedding anniversary day, at approximately 10:45 am, Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed by Gavrilo Princip, 19 at the time, a member of Young Bosnia and one of a group of assassins organized and armed by the Black Hand in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina while they were there to inspect the imperial armed forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This led to many events. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for the assassination. Russia supported Serbia in this case, Germany backed Austria-Hungary. In just few weeks Russia, Serbia, and the likes of Great Britain, Belgium and France had lined up against Austria-Hungary and Germany, and that was the beginning of one of the greatest warfare the world has ever know; the World War I.


  • On This Day 2011, The United Nations Officially Announced That Rinderpest Disease Has Been Totally Eradicated

The rinderpest virus (RPV) is closely related to the measles. The disease was mainly spread by direct contact and by drinking contaminated water, although it could also be transmitted by air. The disease is believed to have originated in Asia, later spreading through the transport of cattle. It is a viral disease of cattle, domestic buffalo, and some other species of even-toed ungulates, including buffaloes, large antelope and deer.

Death rates during outbreaks were usually extremely high.

Despite the fact that there has been numerous outbreaks of this virus at time past, the last confirmed case of rinderpest was reported in Kenya in 2001. Since then, while there have been no confirmed cases, the disease is believed to have been present in parts of Somalia past that date. The final vaccinations were administered in 2006, and the last surveillance operations took place in 2009, failing to find any evidence of the disease.

After years of careful tests and examinations, On 28th of June 2011, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization Officially confirmed the rinderpest disease has been totally eradicated on the surface of the planet earth, making it the second to attain that status after smallpox.


  • On This Day 1820, Tomatoes Were Proven Edible

There was a time people believed tomatoes were poisonous, and rightly so. For one thing, they belong to the family Solanaceae, which has many plants of poisonous nature.

On june 28th 1820 though, a man named Col. Robert Gibbon Johnson from Salem County, NJ, consumed a quantity of ripe tomatoes before an audience, to prove that tomatoes were both edible and delicious.

Thanks to this discovery, a great number of people now consume tomatoes on a daily basis the world all over.


  • On This Day 1926, Mercedes Benz Was Established

On 28 June 1926, Benz & Cie. and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft formally merged becoming Daimler-Benz AG (Aktiengesellschaft) and agreed that thereafter, all of the factories would use the brand name of "Mercedes-Benz" on their automobiles.

Mercedes-Benz sales in Europe have increased slowly but steadily from 2009 through 2014. And today its one of the most popular car brands in the world.


  • On This Day 2007, Former President Umaru Yar’Adua Declares Assets

It was on the 28th of June 2007, a month after he was sworn in, Former Nigerian President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua declared his assets, becoming the first Nigerian President to do so.

This is in fulfillment of his pre-election promise of a corruption free administration. This was also in line with the conditions of the law which states that you cannot act as President until you have sent the assets to the code of conduct bureau (CCB).

The declaration showed that he had N856,452,892 in assets, N19 million belonging to his wife, and N88,793,269 in liabilities as at that time.

It is to be recalled that newly elected President Gen Muhammadu Buhari also followed suit when he declared his assets immediately he was sworn-in on May 2015 according to the law.
