Usually, the OBS crew has a studio and a loud public address system with which they pass out important news and events and also entertain people. Corp members who are vocal and have the knack for journalism are welcomed to be a part of the OBS team.
On camp, Corp members are organized into platoons for better organization and coordination. Since competitions are going to be at a premium during the three(3) weeks of orientation, platoon leaders usually do all they can to ensure their platoon come out top in all the competitions. To accomplish this, platoon meetings are arranged from time to time as the need arises, to coordinate the group.
When such platoon meetings come up, what the platoon leader do is inform the OBS about such meetings; time and location of the meeting. The OBS in turn announces this over their public address system.
One major disadvantage of this mode of communication though is that in many orientation camps, the OBS station isn’t located in a place where everyone can hear announcements from wherever they are. Due to this fact, only those close to the station may hear this, whereas those who are not nearby at that time will miss out altogether.
What about trying a communication system that reaches everybody wherever they may be? Yes, with bulk SMS, everyone gets the information at the same time. All you need is a phone number database of all the platoons’ members. The platoons fund these themselves as they enjoy this communication channel.
